News item – Upper School work in University Labs

The children in Years 5 and 6 were taken to Reading University’s Food Science labs to investigate bacteria and yeast as part of their Science work on Micro-organisms. They were given a talk on safety in the labs before putting on protective clothing. They started an experiment on growing yeast before attending a talk on micro-organisms. The children then examined the bacteria which had been found on their hands earlier in the week. Next, they used powerful microscopes to look at bacteria on cheese before returning to their yeast experiment where they found out how much gas had been created by the yeast at different temperatures.
